Frequently Asked Questions

How Does Photoaging Change My Skin?

It may seem incredible, but about 90% of the early signs of aging you see on your face and other areas of sun-exposed skin are a direct result of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays. This premature skin aging is different from chronological aging, because it physically alters the structure of your skin tissues. Some of the most common signs of photoaging are: - Hyperpigmentation - Fine lines around your eyes or mouth - Dull, uneven skin tone - Leathery, saggy skin texture The effects of photoaging are most often seen on the parts of your body that get the most exposure to sunlight, including your face, neck, hands, arms, legs, and shoulders.

How Can A Chemical Peel Improve My Skin?

A chemical peel is a noninvasive clinical skin treatment that uses carefully formulated solutions to address the damaging effects of photoaging safely and effectively. When you have a chemical peel, a customized chemical solution is applied to your skin and left in place for a specific amount of time, depending on the depth of action that’s required. When the solution is neutralized and removed, it gently peels away the uppermost layer of your skin. Chemical peels can be used to help even out skin tone, improve skin texture, and reduce the appearance of age spots, wrinkles, and other common skin problems. They can also be used to address chronic acne or diminish the appearance of acne scars. Depending on your treatment goals, a chemical peel may be applied to your entire face or just to specific areas, such as the wrinkles around your mouth.

Are There Different Types of Chemical Peels?

While all chemical peels are designed to exfoliate dead skin cells, improve skin texture, and help open pores, deeper peels go one step further, helping to correct uneven skin tone and diminish the appearance of wrinkles and pigmented spots. A peel’s depth of action depends on a variety of factors, including its ingredients, how it’s applied, and how long it remains on your skin before it’s neutralized. Dr. Stafford and the team at Contours use the top-tier chemical peel, VI Peel®. VI Peel products contain a blend of powerful ingredients suitable for different skin types, and can be customized to address your skin’s unique problems. VI Peel can help:

  • Soften fine lines and wrinkles
  • Restore a more even skin tone
  • Smooth rough skin texture
VI Peel makes powerful formulations with benzoyl peroxide to help with acne-prone skin, clear pores, reduce bacteria, and increase cell turnover. They also contain salicylic acid to help shed epidermal cells, open clogged pores, and neutralize bacteria while constricting pore diameter.

What Can I Expect During the Treatment?

Prior to the application of the peel, the treated area will be cleansed and degreased to remove any excess makeup and/or excess oils. The peel is then applied and roughly takes about 5-10 minutes depending on the area being treated. Each peel comes with a home care kit with after care instructions which will be reviewed by the technician and patient.

What Can I Expect Following the Treatment And When I Will See Results?

Two days after your VI Peel, the skin will begin to flake. This part of the process will take from three to four days, after which time new, healthy tissue will begin to show. About seven days after the peeling has finished, the final effects from your VI Peel will be visible. The skin will look luminous, smooth, and soft. Hyperpigmentation will minimize, tone and texture will be improved, and a more radiant appearance can be seen. A single VI Peel can significantly repair sun damaged, aging skin. However, in order to achieve optimal results, more than one VI Peel is necessary in most cases. A series of treatments, spaced four weeks apart, can fully rejuvenate and repair the skin, providing a youthful appearance.
