Frequently Asked Questions

What Type of Lasers Do You Use?

At Contours we use the GentleMax Pro® from Candela Syneron– which combines both the wavelengths of the Alexandrite (1064nm) and ND-Yag (755nm) lasers. Candela’s premier hair removal laser which provides quick, comfortable, safe, and effective treatment.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal uses advanced laser technology to disrupt active-growth hair follicles. It works by delivering short pulses of targeted energy directly into each follicle, where it’s absorbed by the pigments. Once there, the energy fragments the follicle so it can no longer produce hair. Gentle and non invasive laser hair removal qualifies as a preferential cosmetic treatment, meaning it effectively targets hair follicles without impacting skin cells or other tissues.

Is Laser Hair Removal Painful?

Our laser utilizes a special patented cooling system that lowers the temperature of the skin at the procedure site before, during, and after laser exposure. This assists in reducing pain in the area being treated. No local anesthesia or pain medication is required, but for more sensitive areas, topical anesthetic cream is available at our office at an extra cost. It has been noted that 2 ibuprofen taken orally 1 hour before treatment may help with pain relief.

What Should I Do To Prepare For The Treatment?

For best results, all areas being treated must be free of: - direct sun exposure within the last 7 days - self tanner application or spray tan within the last 2 weeks - make-up or tinted moisturizer/sunscreen Prepare your skin by shaving 1-2 days before the day of the treatment. Laser treatments may not be performed if the patient has taken antibiotics within the last 10 days.

What Should I Expect After The Treatment?

Once the laser hair removal procedure is complete you are free to return to your normal activities immediately. Some clients may experience a slight reddening around the hair follicles immediately following the procedure. This reaction typically disappears within a few hours. The use of sunscreen at or above 25 SPF with UVA/UVB protection is recommended on all skin areas exposed to the sun for approximately the next four weeks following the laser procedure. It is also recommended that the client avoid heavy sun exposure for the next 10 days. Application of ice or aloe gel after the procedure will generally facilitate healing and cooling. Approximately two weeks after the laser hair removal procedure the body will exfoliate the dead hairs.

Are There Any Side Effects with Laser Hair Removal?

Most clients experience a mild stinging or burning sensation when the laser pulse is delivered and some may experience a slight reddening of the skin or local swelling. This typically disappears within a short period of time from anywhere between a couple of hours to a couple of days.

Are The Result of Laser Hair Removal Permanent?

The FDA has cleared the GentleMax Pro® laser for permanent hair reduction. Since lasers have only been used for hair removal for approximately 20 years, it is difficult to predict the effects of the procedure and how long it will last. However, studies have shown that clients are generally see between 80-100% reduction in the areas treated.

How Many Minutes Will My Session Take?

Amount of minutes used per session is based on the amount of hair in the area as well as pain tolerance. Due to the fluctuations in a person's hormones each month, some sessions may be more painful than others due to more hair growth causing a change in sessoin length. These are average length times for areas being treated. Some patients may need more minutes, others may need less. 5 Minutes - Upper Lip and Chin, Underarms, Bikini Line, Fingers, Ears, Sideburns or Arreolas 10 Minutes - Lower Face or Half Neck 15 Minutes - Full Face, Full Neck, Full Bikini, Forearms, Chest, Abdomen or Shoulders 30 Minutes - Lower Legs, Full Arms, Half Back or Front Torso 60 Minutes - Full Legs or Full Back
