IPL Q & A

What is an IPL photofacial?

An IPL photofacial treatment uses intense pulse light technology to send gentle pulses of laser energy through your skin. As this broad-spectrum light reaches the deepest epidermal layer, it’s absorbed by melanin, the pigment that colors both your skin and its flaws.

Much like other advanced laser-based skin treatments, IPL photorejuvenation disrupts areas of excess pigment, stimulates collagen and elastin renewal, and tightens and refreshes underlying skin structures.

How can an IPL photofacial help my skin?

IPL technology is highly versatile, which makes it an ideal treatment solution for correcting or improving a variety of common skin problems.

Besides improving your skin texture and tightening your pores, an IPL photofacial can be used to help diminish the appearance of:

  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Sun-related damage
  • Freckles and age spots
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Melasma flare-ups
  • Rosacea flare-ups
  • Acne and acne scars

Dr. Stafford and his team at Contours use the IPL platform by Syneron Candela, with sophisticated elōs™ technology that makes it safe for all skin types.

What is an IPL photofacial treatment like?

Safe, gentle, and effective, IPL photorejuvenation is a noninvasive skin treatment that yields long-lasting results. Although IPL technology can be used on any area of your body, it’s most often used to treat the face and upper chest. Most patients achieve the results they’re looking for after multiple IPL treatment sessions.

During an IPL photofacial, you’ll wear eye shields to protect your retinas and corneas. The treatment itself may cause some mild discomfort — most patients describe the sensation as similar to having a small rubber-band snapped against your skin as the IPL device is passed over the treatment area.

If you have a low tolerance for discomfort, Dr. Stafford’s team can apply a topical numbing cream before the treatment to help you stay comfortable throughout the procedure.

A single IPL treatment session lasts for 30 minutes, and you can expect to see beautiful skin and a more youthful appearance after two to four treatment sessions. Because IPL has few possible side effects, you should be able to resume your normal activities immediately after your appointment.

When can I expect to see results?

Following your IPL photofacial treatment, you may notice that areas of unwanted pigmentation (such as age spots) appear slightly darker. These darker areas will fade within a few days, eventually becoming much lighter than they were prior to treatment.

You may also see mild blistering surrounding individual brown spots, which will gently flake off on its own over the course of a few days. Areas of diffuse flushing or redness will gradually fade, leaving your skin looking clearer and younger as time goes on.
